Melbourn Silicone Joint Replacement

Silicone joints are present at every property and are a vital part of any floor and wall tiles or concreted surface.

Commonly, silicone is used in corners of tiled walls where the two walls meet as well as around floor edging, shower recess, vanity and spa bath edging. Silicone provides a water tight seal in these areas which are exposed to a lot of water on a daily basis and stop the water from entering the wall and floor surface. Silicone also allows the flexibility to occur in cases where the walls experience slight movements over the years. Every property will undergo some movement in the walls during its lifetime and the flexibility of silicone will allow for this to occur without showing any signs of cracking along the joints. Older buildings might have grout used in these joints, however even the slightest movement in the wall will show cracks along them which can allow water to get inside and cause permanent damage to the structure.

Use of silicone around shower recesses offers the same great waterproofing properties. Same applies for use of silicone on vanities, baths, and spa baths.

Over time, silicone can discolour, attract mould, peel and in rare conditions stain. In most cases silicone can’t be cleaned.

silicone joint replacement before and after

At MELBOURN TILE REPAIRS, we offer a complete silicone replacement service in which we undertake the following important steps:

1. All silicone areas are inspected for damage
2. All damaged / peeled silicone is removed using special tools and equipment
3. All joints are thoroughly cleaned using a special solution then dried
4. New silicone is installed and smoothed out to a professional finish
5. Different areas will require different joint widths of silicone, these can range from 4 to 12 mm
6. All silicone residue is removed before it starts to cure then allowed to dry
7. Areas can’t be used for 24 hours

Silicone replacement is a slow process and required professional attention in order to be installed effectively. Remember improper installation can cause permanent damage to the property by not offering a water tight seal along joints.

Expansion joint replacement is similar to silicone. The major differences are that most expansion joints are found on hard floors and can occur in both tiled and concreted surfaces. The joints themselves are deeper, wider, thicker and a different. Different sealants are used in different applications and can include types like elastomeric sealant as well as structural engineering silicons. These joints allow the floor areas to move over time and once again do not show any cracking and provide a sealed joint even after the movement occurs.

MELBOURN TILE REPAIRS technicians will remove the old expansion joint compound, clean the joints professionally with a suitable solution, dry the joints then install a new quality suitable compound. Different areas will require different types of sealant. For example, the sealant used in the driveway must be able to withstand heavy traffic as well as tyre hear, whereas the sealant used around the pool must be able to withstand the salt and chlorine.

Contact MELBOURN TILE REPAIRS today for all your silicone and joint replacement needs and we will ensure we provide you with a quality replacement that will last for years and years to come.
